Red Bull Box Cart Race

Top level About Eshowe.

Red Bull Box Cart

Team "USUTHU" - Claire Chennells, Gareth Reeves, Tony Illing, Karl Shultz and Duncan Balmer. The word "usuthu" originates from the Cethswayo's battle war-cry.

Tony's Team
Red Bull Box Cart Race
Hailing from Eshowe, Shaka’s birthplace; we will be arriving, traditionally, in full force representing our Zulu nation as we approach the "Battle of Trematon Drive." Our aerodynamic Nguni shields will set to flight any other competitors. Our ancestors have blessed and promised us that the worn bicycle wheels, which have been passed down through the generations, will give us the starting edge at Trematon. The spear-shaped cart will fly down to Durban and as our team throws the assegai into Trematon – our skills will be revealed. We have 21 years of proven Box Cart experience in Eshowe & no questions need be asked regarding the technical side of our already fine-tuned cart.

Box Cart Champs
Cart building progress report!

Well, last minute stuff as expected. The cart was well over-weight and we had to do some serious angle grinding to get it down to be within the required limits. Tony has been hard at work - really putting in some long hours in his workshop. Gareth has also had major stress in finding the correct parts. The cart is at Unicab being spraypainted and will then be taken to Brockwell for inspection before our test run. The rest of us monkeys are running around looking for outfits and thinking of ideas for our skit! We have a general plan but to get the diversified parties together is the next mission! Farmers, engineers, businessmen and women .... Good mix isn't it?

In the Cart
Well we are looking forward to the big day! Be sure to listen out for the drum beat so all our supporters can stand together and be proud of our Zululand masterpiece!

Baleka, One Time!!!

Claire with Riksha Riders
uSuthu unlucky in Box Cart Race

Thousands of spectators lined Trematon Drive in Morningside, Durban to watch the second running of the Red Bull Box Cart Race.
They were truly entertained with the comedy and fast action resulting in many spills and thrills, with the big screen showing all the action throughout the race including post-race interviews.
The 455 Metre track, with three cross-over points and a bottle neck, ensured drivers were focused.
Brockwell Engineering sponsored Team uSuthu from Eshowe impressed the judges with their creativity and pre-race presentation, but had a mishap early in the race.
The spokes of the uSuthu Shields wheels collapsed and driver, Gareth Reeves, lost control and ploughed into the hay-bale barriers.
The team received no points for time and this put them pretty much out of the running.
The other Zululand entry, Top Gun, consisting of Gavin Dickson, Quenton Benningfield, Timothy Benningfield and Mark Todd, arrived with great fanfare and took a few pot shots with their mortar, launching empty Red Bull cans into the crowds.
On the track they were also devastating and beat their opposition, Chilli Banditos.
It was bad luck that they did not receive a higher rating.
The eventual winner, out of 67 teams entered, was ‘Flower Power’
Their pre-race presentation proved very popular with the spectators and they set a good time in their heat.
