Vukani Cultural Museum

Vukani Museum Building

Containing over 3,000 items, this Museum is home to the biggest collection of Zulu artifacts in the world. A self-help project was initiated in Eshowe by Swedish missionary Lefroth in the early 1950's to preserve the traditional crafts of the Zulu people. The designs and colours, made from natural products, have evolved over many years.
Vukani Museum display

Recognising the historical and educational value of this national heritage collection, both for local community and overseas visitors, Rotarians and residents of Eshowe became aware that the current museum building was in a poor state of repair and in need of renovation and rejuvenation. Together they obtained R450,000 from Kwa-Zulu Natal LOTTO to fund the building of a new home for the Vukani Collection on the same site as the Zululand Historical Museum (Fort Nongqayi). This is currently in progress, with completion envisaged for August 2001.

Wizzy Digital Courier

Over the last three years our club has given moral support to Andy Rabagliati and his project Wizzy Digital Courier, an internet access system targeted at schools in Rural areas. Wizzy has a number of successful installations in Zululand.

Wizzy is running a pilot project in Cape Town with the Shuttleworth Foundation

The system is uniquely adapted for providing cheap internet access for all school learners - and meshes in well with Rotary's rural classroom projects. This project is to raise money for website and internet access to disadvantaged communities.
