The Zulu Kings Reed Dance (uMkhosi woMhlanga) at eNyokeni Palace

Every year in September over 25 thousand Zulu Maidens gather at King Goodwill Zwelithini’s royal palace for the Zulu Reed Dance (uMkhosi woMhlanga). The Reed dance is a colourful and cultural celebration that promotes respect for young women, and preserves the custom of keeping girls as virgins until marriage.

The tour to the Zulu Reed Dance leaves from The George Hotel and Zululand Backpackers in Eshowe at 8.00 am on the 11th of September 2010, and returns before 7.00 pm, or when there is a consensus amongst the clients. If you take your own vehicle it gives you the flexibility to leave when you’re ready. The cost of the tour is R450, which includes a light picnic lunch. (Press and VIP access can be arranged, please enquire well in advance.)

If you need accommodation, you can stay over at The George Hotel from R395, The Chennells Guest House from R495, or The Zululand Backpackers from R125. Airport transfers are R1000.

Directions: Drive North on the N2 from Durban. After +- 110km, Take Dokodweni Offramp to Eshowe. When in Eshowe follow signs to The George Hotel.

The way the lunch works...

Lunch is a 7 course meal, which starts at 12:00 (recommended time of arrival 11:30 - for caiparinhia cocktails). The meal is treated like a food tasting, so our cooking is done outside on fires and goes on course after course throughought the day. Lunch finishes around 16:00/16:30 (but depends on the pace of the crowd). The idea is to slow down, enjoy the meal and just relax!

Dress code : Very relaxed, so sarongs and flip flops are the order of the day.
Rate : Saturdays and Sundays : R140pp / Mondays - Fridays R150pp (Bookings essential) We are generally opened on Saturdays and Sundays, however if you would like to make a booking for during the week we require a minimum of 15 people.
